How It All Began

A precursor to the DecentraTech Collective, the Austin Blockchain Collective was founded in the early spring of 2018, with an initial mission to establish Austin, TX as a recognized hub of blockchain and cryptocurrency innovation.

It has since evolved to focus on a broader education mission though it maintains a strong sense of local community, tapping into Austin’s vibrant startup scene to deliver its programs.

Some highlights of its achievements to date include:
  • Held its first public meeting at a standing-room-only session at SXSW in 2018.
  • Recognized as “Civic Engagement Initiative of the Year” in 2018’s Smart Cities Dive Awards.
  • Supported the City of Austin with its MyPass secure digital document wallet focused on the needs of the homeless population.
  • Presented work by the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance, Interwork Alliance, Hyperledger and Trusted IoT Alliance.
  • Via its meetup events, highlighted several public blockchain platforms – including Bitcoin, Decred, DigiByte, EOS, Ethereum, Factom, Nano, NEM, Polkadot, Stellar. VeChain and Wanchain.
  • Also via its meetups, investigated blockchain’s value proposition for agriculture, healthcare, supply chain management and financial services.
  • Provided education on the emergence of DeFi, non-fungible tokens and stablecoins.
  • Held a number of sessions related to personal data ownership and monetization.
  • Hosted representatives from the State of Wyoming to learn about its leadership in blockchain regulation and forge collaborations.
  • Partnered with Capital Factory on programming for its Innovation Council events and Startup Week activities.
  • Advised SXSW on blockchain content via its Advisory Board and provided experts for its mentor sessions.
  • Aligned with Dell Medical School to create and host the Blockchain and Digital Transformation in Health symposium in February 2020.
  • Aligned with City of Austin agencies and State lawmakers to provide advice and guidance on blockchain and cryptocurrencies.

Today, the Austin Blockchain Collective convenes as an affiliate of the DecentraTech Collective. The Austin Blockchain Collective continues to maintain ties with Capital Factory, the University of Texas at Austin, SXSW and the Texas Blockchain Council, as well as with numerous businesses and thought leaders.
